Music at Darrow

Music at Darrow covers many styles and interests. The Darrow Chorus, which is part of the music curriculum and a credit-bearing course, is an a cappella vocal group that performs music from the 1400s to songs released by popular artists including Billy Joel, Sara Bareilles, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Students with instrumental experience can join various ensembles and take private lessons. Additional music classes include Music Theory, Music in Our Lives (the history of music explored in its social, political, and historical context), and a Singer/Songwriter class that develops songwriting skills with performance and recording of original works, including arranging for professional instrumentalists for the final performance of the year. Students perform at several events throughout the year, such as:

Concerts - both on and off campus

Darrow Coffee House - an open mic event where anyone can sign up in advance to perform in front of peers. Coffee House has featured guest artists from the professional world as extra entertainment. Professional guest artists may also appear in their own recital series with students joining them on stage.

Darrow Music Showcase - an event that brings all Darrow musicians together in their respective groups and in combined configurations. Works are often complemented by professional musicians on strings or in a jazz trio and cover a range of genres from Mozart, Ray Charles, Nirvana, Radiohead, to American Analog Set.

Members of music ensembles learn technique through development of listening skills and imagination. Musicians perform a wide range of music styles, choose and arrange some of their own repertoire, and perform in a variety of venues and events both on campus and the greater community.
