Baccalaureate and Commencement
Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2
As the end of the school year approaches quickly, we feel it is important for parents to be aware of our expectations for the close of school. Outlined below you will find information pertaining to Baccalaureate, Commencement, the protocol for checking out of the dorm, and some other miscellaneous information.
Baccalaureate/Commencement:
It is the tradition at Darrow to recognize the success of our seniors at Commencement, and the achievements of the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors at the Baccalaureate Ceremony. This Ceremony will take place in the Tannery on Friday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. All students are required to attend the pre-Baccalaureate Ceremony dinner in the Dairy Barn at 6:15 p.m. and the Baccalaureate Ceremony. Parents are also welcome to join us.
Commencement will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, and all Darrow students are required to attend. Since there is limited seating in the Tannery, and the entire student body must be present, only parents and guests of seniors are able to attend Commencement exercises. All students and parents are invited to attend the Darrow Family Luncheon following Commencement.
Students may go off campus with their parents or guardians after Baccalaureate on Friday evening by checking out with the Administrator on Duty (AOD) but students must return to campus by 11:00 p.m. As always, each student will be held responsible for Darrow School rules throughout the weekend. Appropriate dress for Friday dinner, Baccalaureate, and Commencement is jacket and tie for the boys and semi-formal dress for the girls.
Dorm Checkout
As all faculty are required to attend Commencement, no students will be permitted to check out before 1:00pm on Saturday.Dorm room and mailbox keys must be returned to Dorm Parents. Dorm rooms must be clean and completely emptied.
All students must vacate campus by 3:00 p.m. (International students: Please contact the Dean of Students Office regarding any travel challenges and need for an additional night on campus.)
Shipping/Packing/Storage:
Students are responsible for taking or shipping their belongings home for the summer. Tape, mailing labels, and boxes are available for students to purchase. The UPS Store will set up a location on campus to enable students to ship packages. Shipping and supply costs may be charged to SDA, providing there are sufficient funds, or a major credit card can be used. Seniors may not store any belongings at Darrow upon graduation. Limited space is available for students who wish to store boxes over the summer.
Transportation:
The School would be happy to arrange taxi or van transportation for students to the bus, train, or airport. Please complete End of Year travel form and return it by May 21. Again, please be sure there are sufficient funds in your child’s SDA for transportation costs.
Miscellaneous:
Our maintenance staff works extremely hard to keep dorms safe and clean for the students throughout the year and our expectation is that students will leave their rooms and dorms as they found them at the beginning of the year. With that in mind:Rooms will be inspected during the final evenings and days of school. Students should expect to be restricted on the last night of school and/or run the risk of being assessed a significant cleaning charge if they fail to meet our expectations of dorm cleanliness. Once all students have checked out of the dorms, Mr. Seamon and his staff will do a final walk through the dorms to assess the condition of the rooms. Please be reminded that there is a $25 room-cleaning fee charged to all students that will be taken out of the Room Damage Deposit.
Should there be a need for any additional room cleaning or repair and only one student is responsible for the damage, he/she will be charged accordingly. If there is more than one occupant of the room and no one takes responsibility for the damage, the cost will be divided among the students occupying the room.
