Spring Term
At Darrow, spring is a time of exploration, when students stretch themselves in ways they never thought possible.
Occurring directly after final exams are finished and before the senior class graduates, Spring Term is a special week-long intensive hands-on learning seminar. All seminars are designed and led by Darrow faculty members and contain activities and experiences occurring throughout each day. Most choices include a component of sustainability and community service, and many involve students in 24-hours-per-day living/learning experiences.
In mid-February, students and their families are mailed the much-anticipated Spring Term guide. From this, they select courses which interest them, and then the fun and excitement of planning begins! From deciding on meals and daily schedules to gathering and packing supplies, students and the faculty advisors for that project prepare for this invigorating conclusion to the Darrow School year. Students and teachers treasure the opportunities and find rewards in the least likely places, such as these previous projects:
- They have gone to New Orleans and assisted in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, rebuilding homes and communities.
- They have traveled to Belize to work with local elementary school children, to Costa Rica to explore a rain forest, and to Utah to ride the rapids.
- They have volunteered on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.
- They have built Shaker furniture, ridden horses, renovated a house for Habitat for Humanity, and cooked and tasted foods from different cultures.
Each year brings new opportunities to explore and learn.
At Darrow, Spring Term celebrates the best of what we do in hands-on learning and who we are as a community of learners.
