Renewable Energy
Solar Energy
The sun helps to power Darrow’s Samson Environmental Center (SEC), thanks to some photovoltaic solar panels, which convert sunlight directly into electricity without pollution. Capable of generating up to 2 kilowatts of energy, the solar panels reduce the need for energy drawn from the power grid. Installed in 2003, the panels were supported by a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The use of solar energy is one reason the SEC has been selected as a stop on the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association’s Green Buildings Tour, welcoming nearly 1,000 visitors per year.
Wind Power
In 2010, Darrow installed four SWIFT Wind Turbines on the roof of the Science Building. The small-scale pole-mounted turbines—only seven feet in diameter—can generate up to 1.5 kilowatts at peak production and produce quiet, clean energy with a cool aesthetic. Sustainability is truly something valued by our extended community: The turbines were the result of a generous gift from alumnus Dick Barzin ’49.
