Tennis vs. Storm King (A)

Ed 0 534
Darrow's tennis team traveled to challenge Storm King today and came out with 3 wins out of 9 matches. Unfortunately three of out top players were away today, which left us with a difficult challenge ahead of us. Thankfully Hunter '17, Mickey '18, and Ross '16 stepped up and joined the remaining tier one students, Jasneal '18, Paul '17, and Aaron '16. Jasneal and Paul were both able to come out with victories in their singles matches, and then teamed up to bring us our final victory in their doubles match. With a couple of victories in our first matches, the Ducks are feeling optimistic about this year and look forward to a future rematch against Storm King!

In Softball's first game of the season, Darrow fought hard in an eventual 31-0 loss against Stoneleigh Burnham. Cassidy ('18) had her debut as starting pitcher and has demonstrated vast improvement over last year. Maya ('17) recorded her first Darrow out, starting the game with a fly out. Crystal ('19), in her first at-bat, hit a single and stole two bases. Rochelle ('16) also had a single and several key infield plays. Mira ('18) played her first Darrow minutes at left field and Tyler ('19) was the designated hitter. We are looking forward to warmer weather and continued improvement in all of our players.

Darrow Lacrosse opened its 2016 season on the road with a 19-9 victory over Woodhall (Bethlehem, CT) on Wednesday, April 13th. Darrow came out fast and hungry, scoring the first goal of the game within the first two minutes and never looking back. Scoring came from attackmen Jonathan 16’ (5 goals, 2 assists) and Frank ’16 (5 goals, 3 assists), midfielder Connor ’17 (7 goals, 3 assists), and defenseman Kevin ’17 (2 goals, 1 assist). Eight Darrow players played multiple positions over the course of the game, with Johnny ’17 and Maddie ’18 getting shot opportunities. The four Darrow players for whom this was their first high school game acquitted themselves well, playing with alertness and aggressiveness. Goalkeeper Derrob ’16 had a strong performance in goal, making 17 saves, clearing aggressively, and even getting a shot on goal on a running clear. The Darrow defensive unit had a strong game in front of Derrob, holding off the Woodhall attack and clearing effectively. The Darrow lacrosse team looks forward to carrying the momentum of this win into its home opener against Woodstock on Saturday, April 16th.

Tennis vs. Oakwood (H)

The Darrow Tennis team was able to come out with their first victory of the season today, playing against Oakwood Friends. Jeng-Rung '17, Jasneal '16, Kyle '16, and Paul '17 all won their singles matches, while the winning doubles pairs were Jeng-Rung with Jasneal and Paul with Aaron '16. All of the matches that the Darrow Tennis Team played involved some strong serving, but more importantly, there was a real sense of respect and comradery between the two opposing teams. Having won six of the nine matches played, the Ducks look forward to our next competition versus Oakwood Friends this Saturday.

Darrow ultimate traveled to Woodstock for their opening game, and prevailed 13-9.  Captains Chris (16) - a.k.a. Choice Cuts - and Kipling (16) - a.k.a. Biscuits - combined for ten points and four assists.  Braden (18) - a.k.a. Broduce - played valiantly in his first start, with 2 assists and 9 interceptions and knock downs.  Adam (16) - a.k.a. Beast - and Dylan (18) - a.k.a. Two Scoops - scored the other 3 points between them. Every Duck saw playing time and each player found a way to contribute, with a much needed catch, a timely knockdown, or a crisp pass to keep a drive alive.  Particularly strong contributions came from Max S (18) - a.k.a. Bronas - and Kehao (16) - a.k.a. The Mailman, because he always delivers.  Darrow looks ahead on Saturday to Oakwood Friends.

In its home opener on Saturday, April 16th, the Darrow lacrosse team earned its second win of the season against Woodstock, 18-4. Scoring came from nine different players, with Connor '17 scoring four, Jonathan '16 and Frank '17 three each, Luke '17 and Maddie '18 two each, and Emily '16, Johnny '17, Kevin '17 and Sam '18 each scoring one. For Emily, Johnny, Maddie and Sam, these were the first goals of their Darrow careers. The Darrow team again showed its versatility as, responding to team needs, several players shifted smoothly between positions throughout the game. One notable key to Darrow's win was its domination of faceoffs, winning all but two. Derrob '16 had another solid game in goal, making numerous saves and initiating clears with authority. Looking ahead, Darrow will try to extend its winning streak to three games when it takes on Storm King at home on Wednesday, April 20th.

Ultimate vs. Oakwood (A, V/JV)

Ed 0 711

Darrow traveled to Oakwood Friends for a JV and Varsity doubleheader and suffered a disappointing loss in both games: 12-3 in the JV match, and 15-1 for the varsity. Nonetheless, Peter (18) - aka FloBro - had a point and an assist in the JV game, while Dylan (18) - aka Two Scoops - captained the JV squad ably and contributed two assists of his own. Max P (19) - aka PonyBoy - and Seth (19) - aka BroDec - each scored a point. For the Varsity match, Adam (16) - aka the Beast - scored on a long pass from Kipling (16) - aka Biscuits. Biscuits and co-captain Chris (16) - aka Choice Cuts - played stalwart defense and shared duties as Handler. Zaaron (19) - aka Space Cowboy, Liam (16) - aka SnakeHips, and Leona (16) - aka StoneWall - also played magnificent defense. Kehao (16) - aka the MailMan - made several brilliant runs to the end zone, only just coming up short, even after a tough collision at mid-field.

Once again, every Duck saw significant playing time, with Two Scoops, BroDec, PonyBoy, and FloBro playing much of the Varsity game in relief. It is to their credit that neither squad stopped playing relentlessly despite the score.

Tennis vs. Oakwood (A)

The Darrow Tennis team was able to come back from Oakwood having won 8 of 9 matches! Oakwood was extremely hospitable and not only did we get to enjoy the weather, but we also enjoyed rallying with Oakwood players even after out league matches. Hunter '17 played particularly well today, and both her and Aaron '16 were able to secure their first singles victories! The Ducks couldn't have asked for better weather, or more sportsmanlike opponents. Looking forward, Darrow Tennis is hoping to continue with the current victorious momentum it had obtained. Go Ducks!

Softball vs. Doane Stuart (A)

Ed 0 627
Softball's first away game, versus Doane Stewart, ended in a 19-4 loss. Cassidy '18 pitched the entire game and had one of her most successful games yet. Mira '18 had her first Darrow start and made several key plays at left and center field. Mia '17 took over as catcher mid-way through the first inning and anchored the team for the rest of the game, making a key out at home plate.

Lacrosse vs. Storm King (H)

Ed 0 646
In a game that was significantly closer and more competitive than the score might suggest, the Darrow lacrosse team lost 3-13 to Storm King at home on Wednesday, April 20th. Darrow's scoring came from senior attackman Jonathan '16, with two goals, both assisted by junior attackman Connor '17, and sophomore midfielder Luke '18, with one unassisted goal. The entire Darrow team played aggressively everywhere on the field, battling gamely for faceoffs, ground balls, possession and shot opportunities right to the final whistle. Despite not emerging with a win, the Darrow players were pleased with their effort in this game and optimistic about their rematch with Woodhall this coming Saturday, April 23rd.

Tennis vs. Storm King (H)

The Darrow Tennis Team, today, was able to secure their third consecutive victory. This time, however, we were also able to prove the progress that we have been working towards, closely defeating Storm King, who was the only team thus far to have beaten us. Jasneal '16, Jeng-Rung '17, Paul '17, and Aaron '16 were all able to win their singles matches, while Jeng-Rung and Jasneal were the only doubles match to have won today. Jasneal was a star athlete today, who not only played a strong game himself, but was also able to raise the spirits of his doubles partner to come out with the final win of the evening. The Darrow Ducks has a scheduled match against PDS on Friday, and we are feeling optimistic for this upcoming game and for the rest of the season.

Tennis vs. PDS (A)

Ed 0 604
The Darrow Tennis Team reached their 5th consecutive victory today, at Vassar College, playing against Poughkeepsie Day School. PDS' number one player is ranked top 40 in the state of NY, and we were not able to beat him in singles or doubles matches, however, we were able to win every other match that we played! Herman '19 played a very tough match, going into a tiebreaker, and was able to win after two hours of continuous play. Kyle '16 played a very strong match against his singles opponent and Mickey '18 got her first victory today, playing doubles with Jeng-Rung '17. Kyle and Jess '17 played another doubles match, which went into a tie breaker, similarly to Herman. Jasneal '16 and Jeng-Rung's leadership was noted today, it was their encouragement along with some strong playing that lead us into victory against PDS.
