Another hard fought game in D's house that ended with a loss. 62-41 to NYMA. The guys played their most beautifully orchestrated team game of basketball today. Seniors Frank and Desmond incurred injuries and the guys came out a bit slow. Then they got going and it was great to watch with tons of fan support. Scorers were:
Vincent '18: 4pts.
Leo '18: 3pts.
Zion '17: 3pts.
Henry 18: 2pts.
With the breakout game of his career, Jason '17 finished with 29 points! Another highlight for me was a steal by Jared '20 who looked down court to see Vincent '18 cutting back door on his defender, hit him with a PHENOMENAL pass and Vincent hit his layup for the finish.
Darrow Women's Basketball rolled down to New York Military where they posted a 43-11 win against a young, aggressive opponent. Senior guard KayKay scored a career high 16 points, mixing in a team high 8 rebounds, 7 steals and 3 assists in a very impressive performance. Princess Krystal scored a season high 8 points. Sophomore forward Tyler added 10 points, including 2 of her trademark 3-pointers. Co-captains Mia (senior) and Jayme (junior) played the entire 32 minutes, scoring 4 and 5 points respectively. More importantly, they stabilized several novel player rotations necessitated by the absence of one starter. Sophomore guard Meredith played withering defense, especially in the first half when she led the DWB press. Junior forward Katy had 4 rebounds and a steal. Sophomore forward Anooshah ripped down 5 rebounds. And the highlight of highlights in the game was that senior manager Nyaiah suited up for the Ducks for the first time this season *and* scored a beautiful 15-foot basket that brought the Darrow bench to its feet in happy rejoicing.
In a bruising affair, Storm King defeated Darrow Women's Basketball 27-14 in D's House on Senior Day. Darrow seniors Mia, KayKay and Nyaiah were recognized before the game, along with the 3 seniors from Storm King. KayKay, alternating between guard and forward, led Darrow with 6 points and 10 rebounds. Princess Krystal '19 posted 5 early points for DWB, including a 3-pointer. Sophomore forward Tyler was stymied by the suffocating Storm King defense, but was able to compensate for that with 14 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks - hustle and desire plays, all. Sophomore guard Meredith led the DWB press and added a nice free throw, complete with celebratory dance. Co-captains Mia and Jayme finished the regular season with back-to-back 32-minute games.
Darrow lost to Storm King on the road, 20-62. Scorers were:
Jason '17: 13pts.
Henry '18: 3pts.
Vincent '18: 2pts.
Leo '18: 2pts.
Darrow Women's Basketball notched its first road playoff win in 18 years with decisive win at Poughkeepsie Day School, 48-29. Sophomore forward Tyler paced the team with her strongest game of the season: she scored a career high 17 points, including 2 3-pointers, pulled down 18 rebounds, dished out a season high 6 assists and blocked 2 PDS shots. Senior guard KayKay scored 10 and added 2 assists, right ahead of senior forward and co-captain Mia, who tallied 9 points on 3 3-pointers (plus 4 assists). Sophomore center Leah anchored the back end of the defense, scored 3 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. Junior guard and co-captain Jayme drew the assignment of marking the opponent's top player and did a marvelous job of forcing her to work for every shot. This stellar work was supported by sophomore guard Meredith, who stepped in to mark the opposing player when Jayme ran into a little bit of foul trouble. Princess Krystal added 4 points in her special role. Junior forward Katy and sophomore forward Anooshah helped close out the win with strong defense and rebounding in the game's waning minutes. The win was a total team effort and represented the Ducks' best performance of the season to date. The Women Road Warriors go at it again tomorrow, this time in the semi-finals against Oakwood Friends.
Darrow traveled to Oakwood Friends today for the 1st round of the HVAL tourney. Desmond returned from injury and fueled a hard fought game that OFS won 65-45.
Desmond '17: 18pts.
Jared '20: 11pts.
Jason '17: 8pts.
Zion '17: 2pts
Vincent '18: 2pts.
Darrow had no answer for Oakwood's size, falling to the undefeated defending league champions 51-32 in the HVAL semi-finals. Sophomore forward Tyler netted 10 points, including 2 3-pointers, and nabbed 11 rebounds to lead Darrow. Senior forward and co-captain Mia netted 3 3-pointers for 9 points (and also had 6 rebounds). Senior guard KayKay had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Junior guard and co-captain Jayme led the press on defense, added 4 points and dished out 3 assists. Sophomore forward Anooshah had a strong performance on the boards, 4 rebounds, against the taller, more experienced opponent. Darrow congratulated Oakwood and wished them well in the league finals and New England's and then turned homeward for the final bus ride together this season....
