Boys Varsity Soccer Team Qualifies for HVAL Playoffs

The Ducks will host Oakwood Friends School Monday, Nov. 7, at 2:00 p.m.

Darrow's Boys Varsity Soccer team has qualified for the Hudson Valley Athletic League (HVAL) Quarterfinals. The fourth-seeded Ducks will host the fifth-seeded Oakwood Friends School (7-5) on Monday, Nov. 7, at 2:00 p.m.

Following a slow start to their season, the Ducks took a 4-5 HVAL record into a regular-season rematch against Oakwood on October 26. Their narrow 3-2 victory marked the start of three straight league wins, including a 6-3 home win against Marvelwood School on October 29 and a convincing 6-0 win against Faith Christian Academy on October 31.

"The win against Marvelwood was especially sweet as it avenged a 1-5 loss at Kent earlier in the year, and was the first win over Marvelwood in several years," said Head Coach Shawn Holcombe. The rematch, featuring a quick start of two goals in the first two minutes and tenacious play by the Ducks all over the field, was the "payoff for the team’s work and desire," Holcombe said.

The team, Holcombe said, has been anchored by the back line of Chris '17, Henry '18, Sam '18, Vincent '18, and Jared '20, providing defense in front of goalie Paul '17, who is playing that position for the first time this season. Midfield play by the platoon of Marco '18, Connor '17, Zion '17, Jason '17, Thatcher '20, and Nick '18, has routinely held the middle of the field. On offense the attacking options of Luke '18, Eric '17, Taylor '18, and Heron '20, have helped Darrow tally 45 goals in 13 games thus far in the season.

Darrow has two remaining regular season games against non-league opponents--Wednesday, November 2, at Hoosac School, and home against Watkinson on Saturday, November 5--to prepare for the post season play.
