Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a Minor in Educational Studies, Swarthmore College

Katie Sauvain serves as the English Department Chair and is now in her seventh year at Darrow. Before joining Darrow, she taught grades 6-12 in a variety of educational settings, including a magnet school in Philadelphia, an elite girls' school in Palo Alto, and a progressive arts-focused school near Boston.

Katie’s academic credentials include a Master’s degree in English Literature from Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English. In addition to her advanced degree, she is a certified teacher in her home state of Massachusetts and has also earned National Board Certification through a rigorous external review.

Throughout her career, Katie has also focused on deepening her skills in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work, as well as mentoring early-career teachers. She loves learning from and growing with her students and colleagues. At Darrow, she has led initiatives on standards-based grading and independent reading that have spread both within and beyond her department.

Katie currently teaches Writing & Literature 3, Happiness in Psychology and Literature, and Utopia/Dystopia. She runs the yearbook and literary magazine, and she particularly enjoys getting her hands dirty with her Hands to Work farm crew in the fall.
